Players – Coi Leray | 2025InSongs #56

Coi Leray’s hit single Players quickly became one of the most talked-about tracks in recent years. Released in November 2022 as part of her music rollout following her debut studio album Trendsetter, the song gained massive traction on social media, particularly TikTok, where countless users created dance and lip-sync videos to its infectious beat.

The track samples The Message, the 1982 classic by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, giving it a nostalgic yet fresh sound that bridges old-school hip-hop with modern rap trends. Produced by Johnny Goldstein, Players skyrocketed on streaming platforms, hitting the Billboard Hot 100 and topping various rap and R&B charts.

With its confident lyrics celebrating female empowerment, financial independence, and self-worth, the song resonated with a wide audience, securing Coi Leray’s position as one of the most exciting artists of her generation.

Who is Coi Leray

Coi Leray, born Brittany Collins, is no stranger to the music scene. The daughter of hip-hop mogul Benzino, she carved her own path in the industry, refusing to ride on her father’s fame. Starting her career in 2018 with her breakout single Huddy, she steadily built a fan base with her unique style—an eclectic blend of rap, melodic flows, and vibrant energy.

Players marked a defining moment in her career. While she had already gained recognition with tracks like No More Parties and Blick Blick (featuring Nicki Minaj), Players was different. The song’s widespread popularity on TikTok, boosted by a Jersey Club remix by DJ Smallz 732 and a viral Funk Flex remix, catapulted it into mainstream success.

From underground clubs to major radio stations, Players became an anthem, proving that Coi Leray wasn’t just another viral artist—she was here to stay.

On the Videoclip

The official music video for Players was released in early 2023, featuring sleek visuals that matched the song’s energetic vibe. Directed by Nimi Hendrix, the video showcases Coi Leray in various city settings, confidently rapping and dancing, exuding the self-assured attitude that the song’s lyrics preach.

Unlike some over-the-top rap videos filled with high-budget effects, Players keeps it stylish yet minimalistic. Coi Leray’s signature tomboy-meets-glam aesthetic shines through as she rocks sporty outfits and effortlessly commands attention with her stage presence.

The video’s choreography, though not overly complex, incorporates subtle yet catchy movements that made it perfect for TikTok trends. Fans and dancers quickly adopted the moves, further fueling the song’s popularity.

Talk Nerdy to Me – Music Theory Trivia

Beyond its catchy hook, Players has some interesting musical elements that make it stand out:

• Sample Influence: The song’s backbone is a sample of The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. This iconic 1980s hip-hop track is known for its socially conscious lyrics and groundbreaking production. By repurposing this instrumental, Players blends nostalgic hip-hop with modern rap aesthetics.
• Tempo and Beat: The track sits at around 106 BPM, making it an excellent tempo for dancing. It’s not too fast, yet it has a bouncy groove that allows for both relaxed and energetic movement.
• Chord Progression: Unlike many contemporary rap songs that rely heavily on 808s and trap beats, Players incorporates a funkier, more groove-driven bassline. This gives the song an old-school feel while keeping it fresh for modern audiences.
• Call-and-Response Structure: The repetition in the chorus (“‘Cause girls is players too”) follows a classic hip-hop call-and-response style, making it easy for listeners to chant along. This format is often used in club bangers and anthemic songs.
