“Lost On You” is one of those songs that feels like it has been around forever even though it is not that old. The song was released in 2015 by LP, the stage name of American singer-songwriter Laura Pergolizzi, and became the song that finally turned LP into an international star. It first appeared on the Death Valley EP and later became the title track of the 2016 album Lost on You. The song eventually reached number one in many countries and became the biggest song of LP’s career.

But what makes “Lost On You” interesting is not only the success. It is the story behind it. This is a breakup song, but not exactly about the moment when two people break up. It is about the uncomfortable period before that, when you already know something is ending but the other person seems to be somewhere else emotionally.

LP and the road to Lost On You

LP had already been working in music for years before “Lost On You” became a hit. They had released music, moved from New York to Los Angeles and, perhaps more importantly, built a career as a songwriter for other artists. LP has written songs for names like Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Rita Ora and the Backstreet Boys.

That makes the story of “Lost On You” a little ironic. LP was already an experienced songwriter, but their own recording career had gone through several false starts. The song was written during a difficult period when their personal life and professional life were both going through uncertainty.

LP explained that the relationship behind the song was deteriorating before it officially ended. In other words, the breakup had almost happened emotionally before it happened in real life. That is probably why the song feels different from the usual breakup ballad. It is not simply “I miss you.” It is closer to “Can you really not see what is happening here?”

And that is where the title becomes interesting.

What does Lost On You mean?

The expression “lost on you” normally means that something was not understood, appreciated or noticed by someone. In the song, LP turns that expression into a question about the relationship.

All the memories, affection, expectations and emotional investment are there, but did any of it really reach the other person?

The lyrics constantly return to this feeling of trying to understand what happened. There is nostalgia, frustration and a little bit of accusation. The narrator is looking backward at everything the couple had and wondering whether the other person understands what is being lost.

LP has also pointed out that listeners sometimes interpret the song as a romantic declaration, as if being “lost on you” meant being completely lost in love with someone. That was not really the original intention. For LP, the song was about watching a relationship disappear and wondering if the other person even realized it was happening.

That misunderstanding is actually kind of beautiful. Once a song leaves the songwriter, people are going to make it their own.

The sound of Lost On You

Musically, “Lost On You” manages to sound huge without starting huge.

The song has a relatively slow, midtempo feel, with a shuffle rhythm and a minor-key atmosphere. LP’s ukulele playing and the whistle are important parts of the arrangement, giving the song a folk and almost western feeling before the vocal takes over.

Then there is LP’s voice.

This is probably the biggest reason the song works so well. The verses feel controlled, almost conversational, while the chorus opens everything up. LP can move from a rough and intimate vocal to an enormous, almost desperate sound without making the transition feel artificial.

The whistle is also one of those details that you don’t forget. It gives the song an unusual identity. Plenty of breakup songs have guitars, drums and big choruses. Not that many start by sounding like someone is wandering through an empty desert looking for the person who left.

The production also leaves enough space for LP’s voice to be the center of attention. The arrangement grows around the vocal instead of competing with it. That is important because the emotional impact of the song depends on the feeling that LP is actually telling you something rather than simply performing a pop song.

The strange career story behind the biggest hit

Here is probably the strangest part of the whole story.

LP wrote “Lost On You” during one of the lowest periods of their career. They played the song, along with “Muddy Waters” and “Strange,” for Warner Bros. Records. The label eventually dropped LP.

Then another label, Vagrant Records, released the music.

And suddenly the song started moving.

It became particularly successful in Europe, with Greece becoming one of the first places where the song exploded. From there it spread to Italy, Poland, France, Israel, Turkey and other countries. LP described the experience as almost unbelievable because the song that had existed during such a difficult period was suddenly changing their career completely.

This is one of those music industry stories that sounds almost too convenient if you put it into a movie. The artist gets dropped, releases the song anyway and the song becomes a massive international hit.

Sometimes the industry really does write better stories than the people who write songs.

More from LP

If “Lost On You” is your introduction to LP, there are a few other songs worth checking out:

LP’s catalog is interesting because “Lost On You” can make the artist seem like a singer who appeared out of nowhere with one emotional hit. That is not really what happened. LP had already spent years writing, recording, performing and trying different directions before this particular song found its audience. Their official biography describes “Lost On You” as the breakthrough that brought international attention after years of work.

Why Lost On You stays in your head

“Lost On You” is one of those songs that can work differently depending on when you hear it.

You can listen to it as a breakup song. You can listen to it as a song about regret. You can listen to it as a song about realizing that something important is disappearing while you are still inside it.

Or you can simply listen to LP scream the chorus and enjoy how ridiculously powerful that voice is.

That is probably the secret of the song. The story is specific, but the feeling is not. Almost everybody has experienced some version of realizing that something is ending before they are ready to admit it. A relationship, a friendship, a job, a period of life, whatever it is.

“Lost On You” takes that uncomfortable moment and turns it into a huge song.

And maybe that is why it became such a big hit. LP was singing about losing one person, but millions of listeners heard something they had already lost themselves.

That is what makes a song survive.
