“I Need A Dollar” is one of those songs that sounds like it has been around forever. The piano, the handclaps, Aloe Blacc’s voice and the almost old-school soul arrangement make it feel like something that could have been recorded decades before it actually was.

But it wasn’t.

The song was released in 2010 and became the first big international hit from Aloe Blacc’s album Good Things. It also became the opening theme for the HBO series How to Make It in America, which helped introduce the song to a much bigger audience. It eventually reached number two in the UK Singles Chart and became one of those songs that people recognize within the first few seconds.

And there is something interesting about a song asking for a dollar becoming such a big success. The whole point of the song is struggle, money and trying to survive. Somehow that became a very catchy hit.

How I Need A Dollar was created

Aloe Blacc started writing “I Need A Dollar” in 2005 while driving around Los Angeles. He came up with the chorus first, recorded the idea into his phone and left it there for a while before coming back to it. One of the verses, the “Whiskey and Wine” part, was also one of the first pieces he developed for the song.

This is one of those songwriting stories that makes the final record seem much more spontaneous than it actually is.

The song eventually became part of Good Things, Blacc’s second solo album. The album was released by Stones Throw Records in September 2010 and was produced with the Brooklyn-based Truth & Soul team, whose production gave the album that vintage soul feeling.

The interesting thing is that Aloe Blacc was not simply trying to recreate an old soul record. He came from hip-hop and had already worked with Exile in the duo Emanon before developing his solo career. His first album, Shine Through, mixed soul with hip-hop, salsa and tropicalia. Good Things was a much more focused move toward soul and social commentary.

Aloe Blacc and Good Things

Good Things is an album about modern problems presented through an old musical language.

Stones Throw described the album as a shift from the personal toward the political, dealing with joblessness, homelessness, inequality and the lack of compassion that can come with economic systems. That makes “I Need A Dollar” a very good introduction to the album because the song immediately puts the listener inside that world.

There is also something very smart about the way the album sounds.

The production is warm. The piano feels almost comforting. The rhythm is easy to follow. Aloe’s voice is smooth and controlled.

Then you pay attention to what he is actually singing about.

The song is not really comforting at all.

That contrast is probably one of the reasons it works so well.

What does I Need A Dollar mean?

The title is almost too simple. He needs money.

But the song is bigger than literally asking somebody for a dollar.

It is about what happens when work disappears, when money becomes a constant problem and when a person starts looking for something that can help them carry the weight. The lyrics move between unemployment, drinking, desperation and the need for another chance.

The song does not try to make poverty sound glamorous.

It also does not turn the narrator into a perfect victim.

There is a human messiness to it. He has made mistakes, he has suffered, he wants help and he knows that tomorrow might not necessarily be better.

That is why the chorus feels almost like a traditional folk song. Blacc has explained that he was influenced by recordings of Southern chain gangs and the call-and-response structure of that music. The repetition makes the central request feel bigger than one person.

It becomes something almost everybody can understand.

Everybody needs something.

Sometimes that something is money.

Sometimes it is simply somebody to help carry the load.

The sound of I Need A Dollar

Musically, the song is surprisingly simple.

The piano is one of the most important elements. It gives the song a slightly melancholic foundation while the rhythm keeps moving forward. There is also a strong relationship between the vocal and the groove, which makes the chorus easy to remember.

The arrangement sounds like classic soul but it was made with a modern audience in mind.

That is where Aloe Blacc’s voice becomes important. He does not sing the song like somebody trying to imitate a 1960s soul singer perfectly. There is a little bit of hip-hop phrasing in the way he approaches the lyrics, probably connected to his earlier career as an MC.

It gives the song a strange middle ground.

It sounds old.

It talks about problems that are very modern.

And it is catchy enough to become a pop hit.

AllMusic described Good Things as a vintage sound meeting modern problems, which is probably the simplest way to explain what Aloe Blacc was doing at this point in his career.

I Need A Dollar and How to Make It in America

The song became particularly recognizable because HBO used it as the opening theme for How to Make It in America.

This was actually a very good match.

The show followed young people trying to build careers and make money in New York, so opening the episodes with a song about needing money and trying to survive made perfect sense. Aloe Blacc’s voice also gave the show an identity immediately.

I think this is one of those cases where television and music helped each other.

People who had never heard Aloe Blacc suddenly heard the song every week. And people who discovered the song through the show had an easy way into Good Things.

The song eventually became much bigger than its original album context.

More Aloe Blacc songs

If “I Need A Dollar” is your introduction to Aloe Blacc, these are three more songs worth checking:

These songs are useful because they show that Aloe Blacc is not simply a retro-soul singer. He has moved between hip-hop, soul, pop and electronic music throughout his career.

Why I Need A Dollar still works

There are songs that become popular because they are easy to listen to.

And then there are songs that become popular because people recognize something from their own life in them.

“I Need A Dollar” somehow manages to do both.

You can put it on because the piano is catchy and the groove feels good. You can also listen to the lyrics and realize that the song is talking about unemployment, poverty, mistakes and trying to keep going when things are not going your way.

That combination is what makes it one of those songs that stays around.

Aloe Blacc took an old soul vocabulary and used it to talk about modern problems. He did not need a complicated production or an enormous vocal performance. A piano, a groove and a very simple request were enough.

And maybe that is the reason the song feels so familiar.

Everybody knows what it is like to need something.

Sometimes you just need a dollar.

And sometimes you need somebody to help you carry the load.
